Career Advice from a Ecologist and Writer - Richard Nairn

Updated: Oct 17

What’s your name and job title?

Richard Nairn. Ecologist and writer. Co. Wicklow or anywhere in Ireland

What does your role entail and why is it important for oceans and coastlines?

Well, I am primarily a writer having published ten books, many scientific papers and numerous articles in the media. I focus on nature restoration which is the subject of my latest book 'Future Wild'.

Previous books include 'Ireland's Coastline' and 'Wild Shores.' I believe that the general public needs to understand that marine and coastal habitats and wildlife species are under great threat from our activities such as overfishing, water pollution and recreational disturbance.

I am also a lifetime sailor and, in 2023, I achieved an ambition to sail around the island of Ireland, the slow way. I was astonished by the beauty and diversity that I saw in the beaches, cliffs, islands and open sea and the abundance of wildlife from jellyfish and seabirds to dolphins and whales.

What advice would you give someone wanting to start a career like yours?

Follow your passions and not the career path that appears to earn most money.

This will give you great satisfaction and happiness in life. Get as much experience of your chosen subject in as many roles as possible - student, volunteer, part-time work and overseas work.

This will make you more suited to full-time employment in a job that fits your skills. Read widely on the subject and offer to help experienced people from whom you can learn a lot.

What skills are important for your job?

A good basic knowledge of the natural world and the principals of ecology.

Ability to identify and accurately describe habitats and species in the field. Mapping skills which few people have.

Ability to write succinct and interesting text supported by references where you are quoting other peoples' work.

What do you enjoy most about your work? And what do you dislike?

Being outdoors. Exploring interesting places and meeting people who are dedicated to their passion.

The freedom to do what I want and not be constrained by a 9 to 5 job.

Where can people learn more about you?

Sincere thanks to Richard Nairn for taking the time to answer my questions.
